In 1971 Karin Brennesvik started teaching the traditional Norwegian dances “springar” and ”gangar” in Jondalen. A group of youngsters aged 7 years or more was now sought after to start the course and a search was organised to find appropriate beginners in the local area.

The young dancers were asked to perform on several occasions and found that the group needed a name. The name was decided and the group became the “Småjondølene”. Due to this occasion of the name, it refers to the “small/young jondølene”, it was discussed if they were to change the name when the youngsters became older but the name has stayed with them.

The idea behind starting this course/dance group was to teach the younger generation the old traditions used by the elders in the village, as these traditions were about to get lost with them.
The types of dances used/taught were and still are “springar”, “gangar” and “halling”, but in addition we also have swing and Irish folkdance.
